SUMMARY:2018 Asia-Pacific Drowning Prevention Development Through Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:In August 2018 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia\, more than 40 administrators and lifesavers from 15 Asia-Pacific countries gathered to share\, learn and collaborate on drowning prevention capacity and capability building. \nThe goal of this project was to respond to the 2014 World Health Organisation Global report on drowning and using the 2017 WHO Preventing drowning: an implementation guide to enable The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) Asia-Pacific Region through collaboration to build stronger in-country lifesaving organisations by expanding their relevant knowledge\, skills\, resources and techniques for the development of drowning prevention initiatives in their countries. \nFollowing discussions with Mr Lim\, President of the Life Saving Society Malaysia (LSSM)\, the project was modified to include a one-day event organised by the Water Activity Safety Council (WASC) under the auspices of the Malaysia Ministry of Housing and Local Government. This event\, titled the Malaysia Special National Training Session of Drowning Prevention and Life Saving was held at the Malaysian National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH). While the content of this one-day event had an emphasis on issues for Malaysia and their WASC\, the content was also relevant for the other countries and as such they were invited to participate. The purpose of this day was to input international and local Malaysia expertise into the development of priorities for the WASC and the Malaysia Drowning Prevention Plan. \nThe participating Lifesaving Organisations in the Asia-Pacific Region and members of RLSS and the ILS were as follows. \n\nAustralia – The Royal Life Saving Society Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia\nBangladesh – Centre for Injury Prevention and Research Bangladesh (CIPRB)\nBrunei Darussalam – The Beach Bunch\nHong Kong – Hong Kong Life Saving Society\nIndia – Rashtriya Life Saving Society India\nIndonesia – Balawista (Surf Life Saving) Indonesia\nIran – Iranian Diving and Lifesaving Association\nKorea – Korean Lifesaving Association\nMalaysia – Life Saving Society Malaysia (including LSSM Penang and Kinabalu Life Saving Society)\nNew Zealand – Royal Life Saving Society New Zealand and Surf Life Saving New Zealand\nPakistan – Pakistan Aquatic Life Saving Foundation (PALS)\nPhilippines – Philippines Life Saving Society\nSri Lanka – Sri Lanka Life Saving\nThailand – Thai Life Saving Society and Surf Life Saving Thailand\nUnited Arab Emirates (UAE) – UAE Swimming\, Lifesaving Division\n\nThe three-day programme was structured as follows. \n\nDay 1 – Malaysia Special National Training Session of Drowning Prevention and Life Saving\, with an emphasis on issues for Malaysia and their WASC\, which was also relevant for the other countries attending.\nDays 2 & 3 – the joint RLSS and ILS Asia-Pacific drowning prevention development workshop\, that included awareness of the activities of attending lifesaving organisations\, project planning skills and impacts\, and CPR education using Laerdal Mini-Anne resuscitation manikins.\n\n \nThe project included an expansion of the RLSS Resuscitation Equipment for Low Resource Settings project supported by Laerdal to include 7 Asia-Pacific member organisations of RLSS and the ILS. \nThe project was made possible through excellent collaboration efforts of the Malaysia Water Activity Safety Council and Ministry of Housing and Local Government\, NIOSH\, the ILS Asia-Pacific Region\, RLSS\, LSSM\, RLSSA and the leadership team that included Dr Shayne Baker\, Ms Amy Peden\, Mr Craig Roberts\, Mr Chien Ch’eng Lim and Mr Thuan Tek Geh.

SUMMARY:2017 Enhancing Pool Lifesaving Sport Skills Across the Asia-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:From 15 to 19 November 2017\, 27 lifesavers from 10 Asia-Pacific nations attended the ILS Asia-Pacific Region’s Pool Lifesaving Coaching Workshop that was hosted by the Life Saving Society Malaysia (LSSM) in Penang\, Malaysia. \nThe men and women lifesavers from Malaysia\, Iran\, Sri Lanka\, Korea\, Hong Kong\, Philippines\, Thailand\, Australia and New Zealand participated in a two-day intensive theory and practical workshop learning details of pool lifesaving sport and refining their lifesaving skills. \nThe purpose of the Workshop was to provide an opportunity for the ILS Asia-Pacific Region to further develop capacity and capability in the sport of pool lifesaving within its member organisations. \nLifesaving sport engages youth and adults from all nations in the mutual pursuit of excellence in lifesaving. The global focus on cooperation and teamwork to reduce the burden of drowning is a compelling opportunity. Increasing the participation of youth in lifesaving sport is part of the ILS engagement strategy. Lifesaving sport is an important component of this mission. \nThe Workshop was one component of the Asia-Pacific Regional Plan 2016 to 2020 that identified the need for “a coordinated approach to working together to develop lifesaving sport athletes\, officials and event managers\, increasing the number and quality of sport development opportunities by linking to existing events\, running workshops and engaging in the Lifesaving World Championships in our region.” \nIntentionally\, the Workshop was held immediately prior to the LSSM 42nd National and 5th International Invitation Life Saving Sports Challenge to enable the Workshop participants to put into practice their learning in an actual pool lifesaving competitive environment. \nThe Workshop was facilitated by experienced pool lifesaving competitors and coaches in Steven Kent and Samantha Lee from Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and Leigh Ryan from the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA). \n‘It was amazing to see so many countries working together at an event that will hopefully help grow the sport around the world’\, said Leigh Ryan.\nSamantha Lee remarked that ‘it was great to see how many of the participants were willing and wanting to get in the water and give everything a go’. Samantha also said\, ‘it was awesome to see more countries being involved and hopefully we can continue to grow the Asia-Pacific region’. \nSteven Kent was most complementary with ‘the coaches and athletes who attended were a great bunch of people and it was great getting to know them and understand their processes and how they coach and in what conditions and scenarios they coach in’. \nThe ILS Asia-Pacific Regional Board extends appreciation to the Life Saving Society Malaysia and their Penang Branch for the excellent support in preparing\, coordinating and hosting the Workshop. In particular\, the Regional Board extends appreciation to the LSSM President Mr Lim Chien Ch’eng and Vice-President Mr Geh Thuan Tek for their support for lifesaving development in the Asia-Pacific Region. \nThe Regional Board also appreciates Surf Life Saving New Zealand and the Royal Life Saving Society Australia for recruiting and supporting the coaches who were all excellent lifesaving ambassadors. \nNorman Farmer – Asia-Pacific President

SUMMARY:2016 ILS Surf Lifesaving Sport Receives a Boost in Phuket\, Thailand
DESCRIPTION:The ILS Asia Pacific Region held a Surf Lifesaving Sport Coaching Workshop in Phuket Thailand from 7 to 10 December 2016. \nThe aim of the workshop was to stimulate and facilitate increased lifesaving sport activity through focusing on coaching to build local capacity in beach/ocean lifesaving sport knowledge\, skill and networks which with ongoing guidance and assistance will lead to an improved sporting opportunities and also contribute to a reduction in drowning death and injury across the Asia Pacific Region. \nMr Norm Farmer in his role as President of the ILS Asia Pacific Region stated that the workshop has started to address one key aspect of the ILS Asia Pacific Regional Plan 2016 to 2020 in developing ‘a coordinated approach to working together to develop lifesaving sport athletes\, officials and event managers\, increasing the number and quality of sport development opportunities by linking to existing events\, running workshops and engaging in the Lifesaving World Championships in our region.’ \nThe Workshop was attended by 30 lifesavers and coaches from 10 ILS Full members from Chinese Taipei\, India\, Indonesia\, Japan\, Korea\, Malaysia\, New Zealand\, Philippines\, Singapore and Thailand. A special invitation was made to lifeguard operations in Nha Trang and Da Nang Vietnam a developing lifesaving country and from which it is hoped a new member of the ILS will shortly emerge. \nThe Workshop consisted of a broad range of surf lifesaving coaching theory and practice under the coaching leadership of Scott Bartlett and Daniel Grant from Surf Life Saving New Zealand and Seiji Iinuma from Japan Lifesaving Association. Mr. Iinuma said ‘I had a wonderful time over the few days and many new friends made. Let’s continue this project leading to Asian development’. \nWe were also fortunate to have assistance from David Field from Cudgen Headland SLSC in NSW\, Australia who has much local experience and provided great support to the coaches and the Workshop. David also remarked this was ‘the most enjoyable lifesaving activity I have ever done’. \nThe Thai Life Saving Society (TLSS) and the Phuket-Thai Life Saving Association (PTLSA) were excellent hosts. In particular appreciation is extended to Dr Ithikorn Khamdej\, President of TLSS and also to both Mr. Prathaiyut (Khun Nat) Chuayuan and Ms. Vitanya (Khun Pik) Chuayuan of the PTLSA. \nTLSS and PTLSA Board members with Norm Farmer\, ILS Asia Pacific President \nThe timing of the Workshop enabled the participants to put their learning to good use in assisting with the Phuket Kids Water Safety program on Patong Beach on Friday\, 9 December. \nOn the final day the Workshop participants had the opportunity to put their learning to good use at the 5th Phuket Surf Life Saving Competition also held on Patong Beach. \nThe ILS Asia Pacific Region is planning to host future developmental workshops over the next four years in a range of lifesaving disciplines and also in drowning prevention. \nNorman Farmer – Asia-Pacific Regional President \n
